The new Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent is a ready-to-use polymer in a silicone base that thickens and emulsifies, while imparting recognized silicone properties such as smoothness without a greasy or tacky feel. Available from Dow Corning’s Beauty and Personal Care business, Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent is a water-in-oil emulsion of aqueous sodium polyacrylate in dimethicone. It is useful in a variety of personal care applications including skin care, sun care, color cosmetics, leave-on hair conditioners and hair styling products. The new thickening agent contains an inverting agent (trideceth-6), which helps bring the polymer into contact with the aqueous solution of a formulation. When the emulsion is added to water, the polymer expands immediately into the water phase to thicken and stabilize the formulation. As the formulation thickens, the oil phase ingredients are emulsified and stabilized. The new material carries the INCI designation sodium polyacrylate, dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, trideceth-6 and PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone. The thickening agent is a useful solution for formulating with elastomers, gum blends and other difficult-to-emulsify silicones. It is also compatible with formulations containing a wide range of mineral and organic oils, esters, sunscreens and vitamins. Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent can emulsify and stabilize oil phases up to 50%. It can be used in formulations with high solvent content (e.g., up to 30% ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or acetone) or up to 50% glycerin or propylene glycol. Website: www.dowcorning.com/personal care.
